Guyana’s swimmers competing at the FINA World Championships in Rome Italy will be in action again tomorrow, when Fabian Binns and Niall Roberts contest the 100m freestyle. After encountering some challenges (plagued by the drag-effect) with the swimsuits they had received from manufacturer known as ‘Blueseventy’, the swimmers were able to get smaller suits which they hope to take advantage of in tomorrow’s events. With none of the swimmers having any events today, they took the opportunity of doing some sightseeing yesterday.
Hen Lowe was the only competitor in action on Monday. He swam the 200m Freestyle, entering with a seed time of 2:17.13 which placed him 8th of 9 swimmers in the heat. By the time the ripples settled, he emerged 5th with a time of 2:11.56.
Coach, Nicholas Fraser was pleased with this performance and noted that Lowe will continue to improve once he swims this event at this level of competition and gets better at pacing himself.
On day one, Sunday, all the male swimmers were in the pool, using swimsuits given to them by ‘Blueseventy’.
In the 400m Freestyle, Henk Lowe swam in heat 1 of 10 heats; entering with a seed time of 5:02.63 and finishing in 4:52.56. He was third of four swimmers in the heat.
Of Lowe’s performance, coach, Fraser commented: “Henk used his Blueseventy swimsuit and he felt good with it. I thought he fell off his rhythm at around the 150-200m, where he probably lost focus a bit…he allowed the winner to get too far in front and he didn’t speed up on the last lap. He said he felt pretty comfortable in the pool and the suit held up. I also think that the time is good… ”
Both Niall Roberts and Fabian Binns swam the 50m Butterfly. Fabian was in heat 2 and Niall in Heat 10. Fabian placed second of the 10 persons in his heat with a time of 27.77. Niall started with an entry time of 25.96, but was not able to better it; finishing with 26.20. He was third of 10 swimmers in his heat.
“Fabian went in the 50m fly and seemed a bit slow off the blocks and through the breakout, but he made up for it with a good rhythm through the race.
Fabian complained that the Blueseventy suit filled up with water in the front and back this time.
Niall also went out a bit slow, though he seemed good through his pullout, he fell off his rhythm early doing 14.10 sec in the first 25, he did an excellent back half and finished 26.20.
On Saturday he {Roberts}produced a 26.24 in a practice race with other persons in the same lane with him – maybe proof that the suit really held him back.
He also said that the suit filled with water on the start and it was uncomfortable through the race, especially in the lower back where water and bubbles filled the vacuum created.”
Fraser further opined that his charges were taking some time getting used to the swimwear provided by the manufacturers on site. “This is one of the disadvantages created by the loss of two training days due to the cancelled LIAT flight on their departure from Guyana.”
The head coach, however, noted that he is making all possible efforts to effect a solution to the problem.
The lone female swimmer on the four-member team, Noelle Smith, will be in action on Thursday.
