The Power Stout sponsored Guyana Amateur Powerlifting Federation (GAPF) / Claude Charles Memorial Junior, Intermediate and Masters Championships on Sunday at the St. Stanislaus College Auditorium produced some stunning performances.
Utilising for the first time the new and internationally approved weights set donated by the Ministry of Culture Youth and Sport, athletes were swift to establish a number of first using the modern equipment.
Inking his name in the history books was Kester Lewis who won the Intermediate 67.5kg (148.5lbs) class. He set a new squat record of 485 pounds (220kg) in the process erasing the old mark of 475 ¾ achieved by his cousin Kelvin Lewis at the National Gymnasium in 2008.
His feat was achieved on his 3rd attempt. Such was the confidence of Kester at the time that the new mark did not last too long.
He requested a 4th try to lift the new mark further and was successful in that regard with a new record squat of 501.5lbs.
His 2nd attempt in the bench press was his best 115kg while his best in the dead lift was 200kg for an overall total of 535.00kg.
Theodore Henry, much more known for his exploits in the realms of Rugby, locally, regionally and internationally has already began to make a name for himself as a powerlifter.
Henry competing in the 100kg (220lbs) category, smashed the old squat record of 600 ¾ lbs set by Colin Chesney in 2005 with a new standard of 606 ¾ (275kg). Henry, who was the assistant coach to Laurie Adonis for the national Under-19 Rugby team was the best lifter in his category with a total of 660kg having also achieved a best bench press of 157.5kg and dead lift of 227.5kg.
Theodore also copped the trophy as the best lifter among the intermediates.
The best junior lifter of the championships was Adis Ade Thomas who also became the first Under-19 athlete to deadlift over 600lbs. The young Berbician lifted 600 ¾ lbs (272.5kg) to the utter amazement of the small but appreciative crowd on hand.
Thomas’ best in the squat was 230kg, bench pressed 115kg for an overall total of 617.50kg.
The best master’s athlete on show was another Berbician, Bhojnarine Jagnarine who campaigned in the 40-50 (67.5kg – 148.5lbs) category. Jagnarine totaled 580.00kg (squat 217.5; bench press 107.5; deadlift 255).
Henry’s father, Errol aka ‘Big Man’ was also impressive in his performances and was surely the most hyped up and vociferous competitor. During his lifts apart from hyping up himself, he also had the crowd going with him as he shouted and chanted his call name, ‘Big Man’.
He even used the powder the athletes would normally use to get a firm grip of the bar, to powder his face much to the amusement of the fans and fellow lifters.
