Moen Gafoor rebounded from a narrow sixth round loss to James Krakowsky to cart off top honours, when the Guyana Association of Scrabble Players (GASP) staged its Open tournament, at the Malteenoes Sports Club on Sunday evening last.
The in form Gafoor has now made it two in a row after occupying the top podium position in the CARICOM Championships staged on that day. He has now endorsed the old adage that “perseverance is the key to success.” A mean player, Gafoor has been confined to the shadows of national and former national champions, Abigail McDonald and Fred Collins, respectively. The victory last Sunday is a demonstration of his grit and determination.
The day truly belonged to the lanky player who, from the very first game blew away Everton Lammy by a massive spread of 269. McDonald fared no better in the second round, when Gafoor cleaned her up by another large spread (107).
The inform Gafoor then took care of Julian Skeete by another huge spread (107) before the players broke for lunch.
In the meantime, Krakowsky, who eventually claimed the second podium position, started on a poor note, dropping his inaugural game to Ulric Harris (62). He rebounded in the second round to eke out a slim victory over R. O. Michael (45) before disposing of Fred Collins (45).
The players returned after the lunch break and Gafoor continued his dominance with a victory over Ulric Harris (133). Krakowsky then checked his progress with a slim victory (9) as he (Krakowsky) also indicated an intention to procure top honours.
However, the rampaging Gafoor was not to be denied and he romped home with a comfortable victory over Ruby Cummings (78). Krakowsky grabbed the second podium position with 5 points and a positive spread of 131, while Collins had to be content with the third place after amassing 4 points with a positive spread of 281.
Meanwhile, players are reminded that GASP members convene for practice sessions every Thursday from 18:00hrs at the Malteenoes Sports Club, Thomas lands. Persons interested in learning the intricacies of the game can do so at an interaction session hosted by GASP executive on Saturdays at the old Guyana National Service Sports Complex, Carifesta Avenue.
The sessions would be held for the duration of the August holidays and are free of charge. The function is facilitated by the executive and top players of GASP.
