– medical watch doctor
Dr. Saruabh Mehta, a Pharmacist attached to the Guyana Watch team has said the government needs to pay closer attention to the elderly population in Guyana in an effort to treat their long term chronic diseases.
In a comment to Kaieteur News yesterday during their medical outreach in Meten-Meer-Zorg, West Coast Demerara, Dr. Mehta recommended that the administration establish clinics in every community to deal specifically with the elderly.
“I think that they should have some medical clinics in every area so that the elderly can go and have somebody follow up on them.”
He added that older folks also need to be properly educated on the preventative measures against the chronic diseases and those who have already developed the illnesses need to be made aware on how to treat them.
Dr. Mehta also recommended that the government conduct similar clinics like the Guyana Watch every two to three months for high risk persons and do follow up work on them in order to have a healthy population.
Meanwhile, the clinic saw a total of 590 patients yesterday at the Meten-Meer-Zorg Primary School. Of that number, 406 were adults, while 125 were children.
Forty five persons were treated for dentistry related issues, while 14 were seen by the Pediatric Cardiologist.
The pharmacy had more than a $1 million worth in medication for diabetes, high blood pressure, vitamins, fungus infection and antibiotics.
Pediatric Cardiologist, Dr. Jaienda Sharma told this newspaper that children who were born with heart problems need to be treated by the time they reach the age of five.
These are cases, he said that the Guyana Watch Team is trying to identify.
Thus far, approximately 25 cases have been found. He said that the patients are firstly assessed and if a patient is found with a complicated heart situation, they are then transferred to the Georgetown Public Hospital.
In Patentia, West Bank Demerara on Saturday, the team saw a total of 454 patients, which included 286 adults and 168 children.
The campaign is a free medical clinic put on by Guyana Watch, a non-governmental organisation made up of mostly overseas- based Guyanese that has been bringing a team of doctors to Guyana for the past 17 years.
