…public interest outweighs private agenda – Robeson Benn
Despite orders by Minister of Public Works, Robeson Benn, not to stop hire car drivers from parking at the head of the UG access road, the police ordered that a ‘No Stopping’ sign be place at the said area.
There seems to be a challenge between Commissioner of Police, Henry Greene, and Minister of Public Works, Robeson Benn, as to who can permit the hire car drivers from plying their trade in the vicinity, one of the drivers said.
Yesterday, Minister Benn told Kaieteur News that he, Traffic Chief, Neil Semple and Commissioner of Police, Henry Greene, visited the UG access road where the ‘No Stopping’ signs have been placed.
According to the Minister, by Monday the sign will be removed and the drivers will be allowed to park in the area to transport University of Guyana students to campus.
Benn noted that the UG students must access their transportation because they take precedence over private interest.
On Wednesday last, Minister Benn had stated that the public interest would override private agendas. The police are acting out of their jurisdiction to remove hire cars from Government reserve at University of Guyana access road, Turkeyen.
Benn told the media. What is referred to as UG ‘road head’ is government reserve, he added.
He said that he is disappointed to learn that the police, acting on behalf of a private resident, have been moving the drivers of hire cars from the reserve.
The Minister had urged that the police desist from such activity.
Benn stressed that the road reserve belongs to the government and the government can assign areas along that road for activities in the public interest and that is his intention.
Over the past few weeks, the police have been removing hire cars from the area since a private resident in the area complained that the cars are destroying their land.
However, Minister Benn is contending that the area where the cars are parked daily belongs to the government.
