The Guyana Association of Scrabble Players (GASP) hosts its third interactive session this morning, at the Old Guyana National Service Sports Complex, Carifesta Avenue, starting at 09:30hrs.
To date, more than 30 youngsters from schools in Georgetown and its environs have attended the programme and from all indications, have benefited immensely.
The sessions are the brainchild of the GASP executive, aimed at creating wider awareness as well as to introduce participants to the intricacies of the sport. The sessions are held every Saturday from 09:30hrs – 12:00hrs, continuing throughout the August holidays, and would be facilitated by GASP executives and players.
To date, the participants have been introduced to basic techniques of the sport, including the expert use of the two letter words, hook techniques, tallying of points and tile tracking among other skills. The students were also allowed to compete against each other and the feedback received suggests that they have benefited from the exercise. This morning, the students will once again compete among themselves, under the tutelage of the senior players.
President of the GASP, Moen Gafoor, expressed satisfaction at the progress of the participants. He is heartened that the numbers have grown since the first session, which less than a dozen persons attended. Last Saturday more than 30 students attended the sessions. Gafoor is confident that at its culmination, GASP would have achieved its initial objective of creating a high level of awareness. A school tournament is also on the cards.
Meanwhile, the senior players would convene at the Malteenoes Sports Club this morning to compete for honours in the GASP Open championships.
Among those battling for the top podium spot are national, and former national champions, Abigail McDonald and Fred Collins, respectively. Keen competition can also be expected from Moen Gafoor, James Krakowsky and Ulric Harris. The distaff side would be led by Yvonne Murray, Grace Hercules and Ruby Cummings among others.
Players are asked to be at the venue for registration at 09:30hrs and a prompt start at 10:00hrs.
