The Georgetown Magistrates’ Court turned chaotic yesterday morning after murder accused, Randel Bacchus, created a ruckus in the courtyard.
Bacchus openly threatened Magistrate Nigel Hawke and Police Prosecutor Robert Tyndall.
Randel Bacchus and ex-policeman Andrew Morris, are accused of killing scrap metal dealer Akbar Ali, last year.
Ali was killed after he fought back with attackers who robbed him of an undisclosed sum of money. The main witness to the murder was Ali’s wife who was present with him at the time of the murder.
Yesterday’s incident stemmed from a prisoner losing his cell phone and $5000. The prisoner was waiting for his bail to be posted by relatives. Kaieteur News understands that after the prisoner realised that his possessions were missing, he immediately lodged a complaint with the court lock-ups inspector. This is the second time that something similar in nature has happened at the court.
Indigo Ross, 26, of C Field Sophia Squatting area, was on Thursday accused of robbing Dinesh Singh of a cell phone. He allegedly used an “ice pick”. At the time he was in the lockups.
The inspector in charge of the court lock-ups requested that every prisoner be checked before they are taken to the court rooms.
As Bacchus was being searched, Police Prosecutor Robert Tyndall happened to be passing by and the accused began hurling expletives at the prosecutor, even asking the prosecutor to open the handcuffs so they can fight.
Bacchus was heard saying “Ever since you (Tyndall) mek that woman point me out I got you on meh mind. I gon kill ya”.
The prisoner continued to tell the prosecutor that if he thinks that he, the prisoner, was afraid he should tell the other officers to open the handcuffs and see what will happen.
“Open de f**king handcuffs and ya gon see wha going to happen. I would f**k you and ya family up. You too wicked”.
The prosecutor who spoke briefly to members of the media said that Bacchus would be charged for disorderly behaviour among other charges.
Bacchus is accusing the prosecutor of tampering with the main witness in his murder trial.
As the preliminary inquiry which is currently being heard before Magistrate Nigel Hawke, Ali’s wife was called to give evidence in chief.
It was alleged that during her cross examination she was asked to identify Bacchus and took almost 15 minutes to point out the accused, but only after being prompted by the prosecutor.
That incident happened almost a month ago, and ever since Bacchus has been misbehaving whenever he is summoned to appear in court.
Bacchus had refused to leave the court locks on two occasions, prompting the magistrate to leave his post and go down to the lock ups.
Yesterday’s uproar caused the daily proceedings of the court to be suspended, since the magistrate along with the prosecutor refused to work under those circumstances.
Other magistrates and lawyers who witnessed the entire episode expressed disgust as how prisoners are allowed to disrespect officers of the law.
