The Ministry of Culture Youth and Sport yesterday handed over prizes won in the Timehri Inter-Block football competition, which concluded recently.
Airport had defeated Ice House Road 1-0 in the final and for their efforts they collected the first place trophy and $25,000, compliments of the Ministry.
Making the presentation was Parliamentary Secretary within the Ministry Steve Ninvalle to Airport’s representative and scorer of the winning goal in the final, Saittlmo Sam. Owen Holligan of Ice House Road collected the runner-up trophy, while a pair of boots was presented to the most valuable player of the tournament, Sheldon Holder.
Some 13 teams participated in the tournament and according to Ninvalle, it was the largest number of teams to take part in any Inter-Block competition the Ministry has organised to date. He noted that these tournaments are designed to assist with the grassroots development of the game in Guyana, and to provide a healthy and exciting medium for players to compete against each other, while building a spirit of camaraderie at the same time.
Ninvalle disclosed that they are in no way finished as more competitions are slated for the Bauxite Mining Town of Linden and Berbice among other areas. The launching of the tournament in Bare Root is set for tomorrow.
