Alonzo Greaves returned to podium form when he captured the top spot in the Smalta sponsored ‘Teach Them Young’ cycling meet, the first for the 33rd annual coaching clinic run by the National Sports Commission with National Coach Hassan Mohamed in charge.
The race which attracted nine starters – a number of riders opting to rest including Warren Mc Kay who has been in winning form – saw Greaves winning in a time of 1 hour 25 minutes 16.38 seconds.
Following Greaves to the line were Robin Persaud, Tony Simon, Geron Williams, Thoran Harris and Ossie Edwards in that order.
Greaves won six of the eight prime prizes with the other two taken by Williams. By the 5th lap of the 35 lap race, the top four riders had already stamped their authority by opening an unbeatable lead. They eventually lapped the others.
Ozia McCually and BMX sensation Raymond Perez continued their dominance over their competitors. McCually won the BMX open event ahead of Johnathan Fagundes and Paul De Nobrega. He was also victorious in the upright race. Lawrence Boston and Andre Petty had to settle for 2nd and 3rd.
Perez, who has been dominating his peers ever since he came on the scene, continued in that vein yesterday with wins in the BMX 6-9 and 9-12 races. Dineshwar Ragubeer was runner up in both races while Deeraj Garbarran and Christopher Griffith placed third in the respective events.
Olandio King won the BMX 12-14 clash, Nicholas Alves and Darius Ramsammy filling the other two spots in that order. Female rider Naiomi Singh was tops in the 12-14 clash.
The BMX girls’ 6-12 race went to Ashley Anthony.
In the juvenile 10-lap match-up there was an all Mahaica sweep of the top three positions. Kurt La Rose outsprinted Dellon Desa and Regan Gibbons to the line.
In the veteran division, the top three positions were occupied by Turhan Harris, Bochel Samaroo and Esau O’Selmo for Under-50 racers, while among the Over-50’s clinching the top spot was Aubrey Gravesande. Maurice Fagundes placed second.
Assisting with the presentation of prizes after the event was Ansa McAl Trading Beverage Department Supervisor, Alwin Benjamin.
