A female Sergeant of police is nursing a fractured shoulder after she was allegedly dragged down the stairs of the Brickdam Traffic Office on Thursday by an irate minibus driver.
Sergeant Cheryl Layne was slapped and then hauled down the stairs by the bus driver after ranks refused to issue him with a minibus pass.
The man who is said to be a former Traffic rank has since been detained and is awaiting his day in court.
According to reports, the man turned up at the station and requested to be issued with the pass immediately, although he did not make the application on time.
A source at the Brickdam Traffic Office explained that the passes are normally issued several hours after a proper request is made.
This was pointed out to the driver who insisted that since he was an ex-cop he should be treated expeditiously and began abusing a constable who was attending to him.
Sergeant Layne heard the commotion and intervened, telling the bus driver that his late request could not be accommodated.
He was asked to leave the office and he became angrier.
He then attacked the Sergeant, slapping her in the face.
When the Sergeant tried to defend herself, the man grabbed her and hauled her down an inner stairway, resulting in the female rank suffering the injuries.
Several male officers who heard the commotion rushed to the Sergeant’s assistance and subdued the bus driver, whom they promptly arrested.
Sergeant Layne was rushed to the hospital where her shoulder was placed in a cast.
