$600,000 equipment
set handed over
State-of-the-Art equipment worth in excess of US$3,000 was handed over to the Guyana Amateur Powerlifting Federation (GAPF) by Minister of Culture, Youth & Sport Dr. Frank Anthony yesterday in the Ministry’s compound.
The equipment which included different poundage of weights was presented to the organisation to help them prepare for the hosting of the 4th Annual Caribbean Islands Bench Press & Powerlifting Championship next year.
The occasion also saw in attendance Director of Sport Neil Kumar, recently-appointed Permanent Secretary within the Ministry Alfred King, President of the GAPF Peter Green and other members of the fraternity, including the successful three-man team of ‘Big’ John Edwards, Randolph Morgan and Mervyn Moses, who competed in the 3rd Annual Caribbean Islands Bench Press & Powerlifting Championship that was held in the US Virgin Islands.
Dr. Anthony in his remarks said that the GAPF is one of those organisations that have really moved the sport forward.
“With the equipment that you had it is really remarkable that you’ve been able to achieve the kind of outstanding results that we read about recently and I want to commend you for this,” Dr. Anthony told members of the Federation.
The Minister added that it was because of the entity’s attitude and their willingness to engage the Ministry in constructive discussions that has led to the procurement of the equipment.
“It is because of those attributes that we’ve been encouraged to come forward and offer our assistance to you, we’re always looking for partnerships to help develop sports across the country,” he said.
According to the Minister, their role is not so much to criticise people, but to facilitate the development of sports.
He also spoke of the spin-offs of hosting such an event, adding that while they are giving the equipment out, they could also see the positive returns for many other industries through Sports Tourism.
He revealed that next year could be a very exciting period for sports in Guyana with the hosting of the ICC Twenty20 Tournament, CAC Rugby Championship all scheduled to be staged here.
Kumar in his usual style spoke of the genesis of the assistance, disclosing that it started out as a simple, but impacting discussion with the GAPF officials and the Minister which rapidly developed into what was seen yesterday.
“We asked them to source the equipment and present us with a quote and we took it from there until its conclusion here today,” Kumar pointed out.
Green in his response thanked the Ministry for its support, indicating that the occasion has been the culmination of a long dream that has finally come through.
“I made a request of the Minister after telling him that we are severely under-equipped and they almost immediately decided to offer their assistance,” he made known.
He advised all other such associations and federations to get their acts together back it up with a good plan and you can guarantee the Minister’s support.
“The weights are very expensive, and I must add that the Ministry was very prompt and they did not have me running around,” Green said.
The championship is tentatively set for late March or early April, but according to Green the exact date will be known on his return from the North American Powerlifting Federation Congress scheduled to be held in Miami, Florida in August.
Guyana will be sending the same three-man team to compete in a tournament there as well.
