BK International Western Tigers, Fruta Conquerors, Uprising and Santos booked the final four quarter-final spots, when group-of-16 action ended on Tuesday evening in the inaugural Guinness/Georgetown Football Association/Ministry of Culture Youth and Sport/National Sports Commission Futsal competition continued.
The Tigers, showed depth and grit in overcoming the robust challenge of Georgetown Football Club (GFC) 3-1; Conquerors also had to dig deep to overcome Beacon by the odd goal in 3; Uprising outplayed Black Pearl 5-0, while Santos also won by a similar margin against Northern Rangers.
The feature match between Western Tigers and GFC saw the Tigers roaring back from a 1-0 deficit to win the high octane clash. Gregory Denny had given the Bourda boys the lead in only the 2nd minute of play, an advantage they enjoyed for quite sometime.
As the game progressed, it was evident that the Tigers were becoming very agitated and nervous along with their spectators as they questioned a number of decisions made by the referees.
They were however able to knot the scores when their leading marksman Devon Millington rocked the nets in the 17th minute. That was the breakthrough they were searching for and thereafter, it was all Western. Phillip Rowley (19 & 20) eased in a late double a minute apart to secure the Tigers’ quarter-final spot and a date with Uprising – a clash that will certainly set the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall alight on Sunday evening.
Uprising were too strong for Black Pearl and scored regularly in their 5-0 triumph. An own goal in the first minute of play by Jason Clarke set Uprising on their way. Omali Nassy in the 11th, Dwayne Dickson one minute later, Colin Clarke in the 21st and O’Riley Small in the 22nd all contributing.
Conquerors, took the lead against Beacon in the 4th minute when veteran Lester ‘Puppy’ Peters scored with a brilliant header in the 4th minute, after realising that the goalkeeper was out of position.
With the minutes ticking away, the Fruta sponsored side were placed on the back foot, when Nigel Denny found the equalizer for Beacon. But as a former futsal champion having some experienced warriors in the line up, Conquerors rebounded almost immediately to restore their advantage.
Beacon were still in celebratory mood when another veteran, Gerald Gritten fired a long range missile just after restarting the ball from the half way line, the ball eluding all the Beacon players and goalkeeper in the 23rd minute; the losers were still left wondering what really happened even after the final whistle.
Santos, who have not looked as flamboyant as some of the other winners, continued to improve their rating as a strong contender for the title with a sound performance against Northern Rangers, running out 5-0 victors.
It was a total team effort on their part, Andy Duke (10), Quacy Price (16), Renault Fraser (21), Seon McKenzie (22) and Dwayne Ali in the 24th scoring their goals.
In the exhibition matches, The Barber Shop defeated Clippers Barber Shop 4-3, Guinness Bar edged Oasis Water 1-0, Eagles hammered Northern Rangers 6-0 in their female encounter, while in what was the most exciting and anticipated clash of the night, the referees hung up their whistles temporarily to whip the Georgetown Football Association Admin team, 6-1.
It was the GFA team that ran into the lead but the Referees, who were a bit slow in coordinating, eventually warmed up to the task. What served as a major advantage for them was the depth of their bench with more than a dozen subs available and Manager Dwayne Lovell wringed the changes constantly ensuring fresh legs were on court throughout the encounter.
The GFA only had three available subs and were hard pressed to stave off the challenge of the Referees who in the last three minutes had an all female team that ran riot on court backed by the entire Sports Hall.
Sunday’s quarter-final line up will see the Guyana Defence Force facing off with Flamingo, Camptown opposing Pele, Santos matching skills with Conquerors and Uprising tangling with Western Tigers.
