The victorious Monedderlust Under-11 and 13 teams display their silverware. Officials of the BFA and club join the happy youths.
Monedderlust FC, based on the West Coast of Berbice, showed their class at the junior level, when they captured both the Under-11 and 13 titles in the Berbice Football Association (BFA) Youth Development Week competitions, played at the Blairmont CDC ground, last Thursday.
Monedderlust squeezed past New Amsterdam United (NAU) in the final of the Under-11, thanks to goals from Kevin Layne Jr. and Kofi Campbell. Rosignol United, who took the 3rd place, lost heavily to both the champions and runners-up.
Monedderlust won 9-0 on the back of a hat-trick from Keeron Arthur, a brace each from Oziah Mars and Selwyn Jack and one each by Brian Thom and Kofi Campbell.
NAU took care of Rosignol, 5-0.
For their efforts, Monedderlust were presented with the championship trophy and medals, while each member of the team received a football, compliments of sponsors Banks DIH Limited.
The West Coast-based team were also unstoppable in the Under-13 tournament, again turning back the challenge of NAU 3-0. Akimo Watts fired in a double, with the other coming off the boot of Keeron Arthur. Rosignol again had to settle for the 3rd place.
Arthur and Watts were rewarded by the sponsors for being named the highest goal scorer and most valuable players, respectively.
Hilbert Foster, CEO and Secretary of the Rose Hall Town Youth & Sports Club which donated the first and second place trophies for the Under-11 tournament and was also influential in securing prizes – educational and hygiene kits from the Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter Day Saints, was on hand to make some brief remarks at the presentation ceremony.
Foster commended the President and Secretary of the BFA for their earnest contributions in helping to keep the young people of our communities meaningfully occupied and out of trouble.
He also advised the youths to always say no to drugs; stay in school and obtain a sound education; to always be God fearing and to be disciplined at all times, since discipline is the key to success in any sport.
He further implored the youths to be respectful to the officials, coaches and referees.
The tournaments were played under the auspices of Banks DIH Coca Cola brand. Corporate support also came from Mahaicony Rice, Gilgeous First Choice Pawn Shop and GuySuCo Blairmont Estate.
