The third annual John S.E. Hernandez Memorial Volleyball tournament is expected to get underway on Sunday at 10:00 hrs, on the Volleyball Court at the National Park.
This tournament is sponsored by the Hernandez family in collaboration with the Guyana Volleyball Federation.
John Sheldon Elquemedo Hernandez was brutally murdered on July 19, 2006 in unexplained circumstances. He was a volleyball enthusiast who, though little was known of him, had great plans for assisting in the development of the sport. It is known that he spent endless hours playing the game he loved with a passion and encouraged others to do likewise, as it was his desire to strive in whatever way he could to foster the game.
In celebration of his memory and in an effort to keep alive the sport that he loved, his family initiated a volleyball tournament in his memory and has received the full support of the Guyana Volleyball Federation.
A release informed that this tournament has now been designated an official Third Division League Tournament and is written into the calendar of events of the Volleyball Federation.
Several teams from across the country including Moruca, the GDF and defending champions Anna Catherina will vie for a trophy and $15,000. The second place winners will receive a trophy and $10,000. Trophies will also be given to the Most Valuable Player and the Best Dressed Team. Medals will be presented to each member of the first and second place teams.
Anna Catherina, who are the defending champions, will be striving earnestly to retain supremacy for three years in a row.
All are encouraged to come out and witness pulsating volleyball action. Admission is free.
