Four Zones to battle for bragging rights
The development of junior cricketers in Berbice has gone a step higher with the launching of the first ever Under-13 Inter Zone Cricket tournament by the Berbice Cricket Board (BCB), sponsored by Poonai Drugs Store of Rose Hall Town.
The tournament would be contested amongst four teams, namely West Berbice, New Amsterdam/Canje, Lower Corentyne and Central/Upper Corentyne.
PRO and Chairman of the Special Events Committee Hilbert Foster at the official launch noted that the BCB had committed itself to organising cricket from the Under-13 to senior level with the main aim of nurturing new and existing talent to fulfill their potential.
Cricket in the Ancient County, he said, is undergoing massive development as the current executive of the Board is committed, hardworking and determined to return Berbice cricket to the top.
This tournament is open to players born on or after the September 1, 1995 and the four teams would be selected by the Junior Selection Committee headed by Leslie Solomon after trial sessions in each area. There would be no financial prizes as the Board seeks to get young cricketers develop a love for the game without thinking about money.
Outstanding players including the best batsman, bowler, fielder, most disciplined player and best all rounder will receive educational packages to assist them in school. All cricketers would have to be in school before they are considered for selection.
Poonai Bhirooj, Managing Director of sponsor, Poonai Drugs Store, came in for high praise for partnering with the Board despite the current challenging economic times.
Bhirooj expressed his pleasure at being associated with the Board pointing out his delight with the rapid development of the game over the past year. He stated that his company believed in the notion that sports is the only successful avenue to keep youths away from social ills, while expressing his confidence in the Board’s ability to organise a smoothly run tournament. Bhirooj also pledged that his company was committed to sponsoring next year’s competition.
The sponsorship package is worth $120,000, which would cover the cost for balls, umpiring, meals and transportation. The Rose Hall Town Youth and Sports Club would provide $100,000 in educational packages to be used as prizes.
Board President, Keith Foster disclosed that the tournament which would be played using the one-day, two innings format, is an important part of the Board’s developmental programme as it is geared to unearth a new pool of talented players who would be identified to play through to the Under-19 level.
The President called on the young cricketers to make use of the opportunity given to them and be dedicated, disciplined and focused if they want to be successful in the future.
The tournament is expected to bowl off as soon as the rainy season holds.
West Berbice will play New Amsterdam/Canje at the Rose Hall Canje ground and Lower Corentyne would clash with Central/Upper Corentyne at the Area ‘H’ ground.
The two top teams would clash in the final at the Area ‘H’ ground while the two losers will play at the Port Mourant Ground for third and fourth place.
A fifteen (15) man squad would be selected after the tournament for special coaching sessions.
