While concerns have been raised about value for money on several drainage and irrigation projects, yesterday the government signed three multi-million-dollar contracts between the contractors and the National Drainage and Irrigation Authority (NDIA).
Kaieteur News had recently reported that a $20 million contract was awarded for the construction of a drainage structure (sluice) at Amersfort, Wakenaam, while $35 million was also awarded for the construction of a similar drainage structure (sluice) in Waterloo, Leguan.
Information now is that the money for both these contracts has been increased from $20 million to $25.8 million, while the budgeted $35 million has also been increased to $42.6 million.
These contracts were signed off and handed over the contractors yesterday at the Ministry of Agriculture, in the presence of the Chief Executive Officer of the NDIA, Lionel Wordsworth; Agriculture Minister Robert Persaud; and NDC chairmen of Leguan and Wakenaam, Durga Persaud and Zakir Khan.
The Wakenaam contract was awarded to S. Khan General Contracting Services, while Jainul Hoosain Civil Engineering was awarded the Leguan contract.
Both these projects are expected to last duration of six months and the scope of works includes concrete works, construction of timber revetment, the placement of foundation piles and the installation of cable and winch.
During a visit to both Leguan and Wakenaam, both NDC chairmen had admitted that while they had knowledge of these contracts, they had no idea of whom the contractors are and when the works are slated to begin.
Yesterday, the chairmen welcomed the idea of the construction of the sluices even as residents on both islands said, they are hoping that skullduggery will not occur. (Fareeza Haniff.)
