A Mon Repos, East Coast Demerara woman who underwent brain surgery in Trinidad to remove a tumour is now paralysed.
The woman, Nafeeza Williams, 31, was admitted to the Mount Hope Hospital last April, after she slipped and fell while cooking. When it was discovered that she had a tumour in her brain, surgery was undertaken, but her reputed husband discharged her without her doctor’s consent and without paying the bill.
The family was in Trinidad “trying to make a better life,” Williams’ mother, Nuroo Neesha Ahmad told Kaieteur News yesterday.
When the family returned to Guyana, it was discovered that Williams was paralysed on the left side of her body and there was a swelling in her head.
She was admitted to the Georgetown Public Hospital but was sent away after being told there was nothing that could be done to help her, Ahmad said.
The family subsequently visited the Guyana Cancer Institute, which is located in the Georgetown Hospital Corporation and was told that Williams needed chemotherapy and radiotherapy, but that they first needed a CAT scan. This was done, but according to the family, when they returned the Cuban doctor who was handling the matter was no longer at the Institute.
Williams has two children, aged 11 and 12. Ahmad said she is seeking the public’s assistance in helping to care for her daughter and her grandchildren.
