Police at the Vigilance Police Station have detained a 33-year-old man following the death of his mother.
Ramrattie Deonauth, 57, of Croal Street, Enterprise, East Coast Demerara, was found dead early yesterday morning, hours after she received a beating from her son.
Her lifeless body was discovered by her husband who was attempting to wake her about 05:00 hours while she was lying on the floor.
This newspaper was informed that Deonauth lives with her husband, a female friend and her alcoholic son.
About 15:30 hours on Sunday, Ramattie Deonauth’s son allegedly went home under the influence of alcohol and began to assault his mother by cuffing and kicking the woman about her body. Neighbours intervened and he went away.
This newspaper understands that the man became annoyed when his mother refused to give him money to buy alcohol.
He was spoken to by his father, Siew Deonauth, who is bedridden with a stroke and whom he dealt several cuffs about the body before going to his room.
The man returned about 20:30 hours and continued to assault his mother whom he dragged into a room and beat mercilessly.
Sources in the neighbourhood informed that Deonauth’s son is usually in the habit of beating his mother whenever he is under the influence of alcohol.
The same obtained on Sunday night and as usual, the other occupants, including Deonauth’s husband who suffers from a stroke, could do nothing.
After Deonauth did not rise yesterday morning, another relative contacted the police who arrived and examined her body, which bore marks of violence to the right eye and arm.
Investigators are awaiting the results of a post mortem examination to determine if the beating Deonauth received caused her death.
