Disagreement with Ramjattan on the issue of Dr. Ramsammy

Dear Editor,
I am deeply saddened by the historic loss of the Ministry of Health building (also because it was one of the homes for QC from 1918 to 1951), and unequivocally condemn this dastardly act.
Like Raphael Trotman (SN & Kaieteur News 19th July), my father (Boyo Ramsaroop) and I believe Dr. Ramsammy to be one of the better Ministers of Government. Indeed, he is hard working, dedicated, and has made a tremendous positive impact on our overall health sector. My praise of course extends to Ministry of Health staff in general, who like most other public servants, are often overlooked because of Guyana’s narrow, personality-centred politics and no doubt, underpaid as well.

Without fear of expulsion or censure, I am therefore in disagreement with my senior colleague, Khemraj Ramjattan, on the issue of Dr. Ramsammy. Dr. Ramsammy was also one of the pioneers of AIDS awareness in Guyana. It was through this cause that I met him for the first time in the early nineties and he has kept true to his endearing personality. My liking this Minister and being in praise of his work in no way alters my position on the abhorrent and indefensible Roger Khan situation.

On that note I beg my fellow Guyanese to understand that this remains an emotional and divisive issue, and I am therefore pleading for tact and sensitivity. This is with the understanding however, that the killings will be thoroughly and fairly investigated by the incoming AFC administration. This will not be a witch-hunt, but will take its cue from the South African Truth and Reconciliation Commission.
Presently, I am reading (online) with amusement the Guyana Times and Guyana Chronicle (GC) concerning Khemraj Ramjattan. Mr. Ramjattan has never lost any support, nor respect within the AFC. In fact his stature has been steadily increasing and it is purely out of fear that these two papers are attempting to sow the seeds of division. The constant talk of Mr. Ramjattan not having any Indian support will be put to rest soon enough. So I am not worried at all, and quite pleased with the money that this free PR has saved the AFC.

I am also in praise of another Minister, Robeson Benn. To the extent that my memory allows, I don’t believe the Demerara Harbour Bridge since it was first built ever felt as solid as it is today. For the longest while it felt as if the bridge was neglected because the electorate on that side of the river was being taken for granted. Also, during the sea defence breakage at Vryheid Lust (ECD) last year, Minister Benn was onsite practically 24/7, and ensured a speedy resolution. Kudos to you Minister Benn!
My praise for these Ministers does not mean I will not be harshly critical whenever there is reason to be, nor does it in any way dilute my support for the AFC. I am simply privileged to belong to the most politically mature party in Guyana.
