NEW AMSTERDAM, BERBICE – Sixty underprivileged persons experienced the altruistic nature of the New Amsterdam Lion’s Club last week during a distribution exercise.
Leila Clarke-Daniels, President of the New Amsterdam Lion’s Club, said that the individuals received clothing, bed linen, table cloths, bath and face towels, footwear and other paraphernalia. The items were made possible through the members of the organisation and represent the first service activity for the 2009/2010 fiscal year.
According to Lion Clarke-Daniels, the year commenced on July 1st and runs until June 30th, 2010.
It was at the beginning of this fiscal year that Lion Alrick Dookie handed over the baton to Lion Clarke-Daniels.
Her plans, for the term in office, include the distribution of school uniforms next month to those in need.
So far 18 children, between the ages of six and 14, have been identified, based on a community assessment done during May/June.
The finding then revealed that there were several children who were not attending school, particularly in the Angoy’s Avenue area.
The parents/guardians blamed the economic situation in Guyana for them being unable to provide uniforms, books and other requisites.
The next project on the list is the launching of the Life Skill Programme for both genders. This would target persons in the 14 to 25 age group. The women would be taught how to sew, while their male counterparts will learn tailoring.
These ventures are intended to assist persons across Berbice regardless of their geographic location.
Lion Clarke-Daniels explained that the Lion’s Club operates under the principle that service has no boundaries.
There is also an ongoing Eye Clinic, a signature project, which has been in existence for almost two decades. The service is offered every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 09:00 to 15:00 hours at the New Amsterdam Lion’s Den.
On those days the range of service includes free eye tests, distribution and repair of glasses, sharing of handouts and when necessary referrals are done. On an average, 60 persons benefit from the eye clinic every month.
There is an appeal for persons who have new or used spectacles to donate them to the New Amsterdam Lion’s Club at Vryman’s Erven. This would assist in sustaining the venture.
The New Amsterdam Lion’s Club has an active membership of 21 and spans Mara to New Amsterdam including West Canje.
