The 4-member Guyana team to the 13th FINA World Championships in Rome, Italy who left today, have all expressed confidence in bettering their personal best times in the events that they have entered.
Coach of the team, Nicholas Fraser had earlier said that based on the training regimen his charges underwent; they are expected to do well even though the transformation from the 25m pool to the standard world size of 50m might pose some problems for them.
The most experienced athlete on the team is Niall Roberts who said he is looking forward to lowering is times. “I think I’m going to perform better in the 50m butterfly and 50m freestyle races and also in the 100m events (fly & free). But I think I’m going to do well in the 50m races.”
Henk Lowe, who will be taking part in the 50m backstroke, 200 and 400m free is still undecided if he will compete in the 1500m. “I am looking forward to lowering my personal times and I’m still in the process of deciding whether I should the 1500 free or not.”
This race Lowe disclosed is a very long and tedious event and he still has to be a bit more focused on the distance to do his best.
The lone female on the team, Noelle Smith noted she was looking forward to the championships and will do her best. “I’m just looking forward to bettering all my times and just going out and do the best I can.”
Fabian Binns, who was a bit mike shy, eventually mustered up the strength to say what he will do. “I think I’ve prepared as much as I could have right now and am going out there to do the best I can.”
All the expenses for the team’s travel to Italy have been taken care of by the FINA. (Franklin Wilson)
