– had several charges for armed robbery, one for rape
By Michael Jordan
A 33-year-old man on previous charges for armed robbery, burglary and rape, was gunned down at around 03:30 hrs yesterday in the yard of his Lot 87, La Penitence Street, Albouystown home.
Rondel Williams was shot in the left side chest and left arm, reportedly just as he had opened his front gate to go to purchase cigarettes.
He died before he could have received medical attention.
Kaieteur News understands that some residents saw a man fleeing south down La Penitence Street and into Independence Boulevard shortly after hearing gunshots.
Williams’ reputed wife, Jenelle Caesar told Kaieteur News that a black cap, believed owned by the gunman, was found in La Penitence Street some 20 feet from the spot where Williams was slain. The cap was handed over to the police.
Relatives say they have no motive for the killing but one person who spoke to Kaieteur News is of the view that the Albouystown resident was executed.
Williams’ reputed wife said that he was employed as a carpenter at the time he was slain, and had one pending case in 2007 for break and enter before the court.
Police sources said that Williams had several prior arrests for robbery under arms and burglary.
Kaieteur News also confirmed that Williams was charged and remanded to prison in April, 2005, for allegedly robbing a businessman at gunpoint and sexually assaulting a 17-year-old girl.
However, a relative said that all these charges were dismissed.
The slain man’s brother, Andre Ramcharran, recalled that he was sitting in the verandah at
around 03:30 hrs when Williams went downstairs to use a backyard toilet.
He explained that his brother would habitually use the washroom around this time.
He said that afterwards, he accompanied his brother back inside the house after chaining the front gate.
But Ramcharran said that his brother then indicated that he was going to purchase some cigarettes and went back outside.
Shortly afterwards, two gunshots were heard.
“I was inside the house when I hear ‘blam-blam’.”
Ramcharran added that he went outside and saw his brother lying motionless by the front gate, which was partly open.
Williams was breathing but was also bleeding from his mouth and nostrils.
Ramcharran said that he attempted to revive his brother by employing mouth-to-mouth resuscitation, and then attempted to get a taxi to take his wounded sibling to the hospital.
Eventually, an aunt arrived with a vehicle, but by the time they arrived at the GPHC, a doctor indicated that Williams was already dead.
“He and nobody ain’t got story; he and everybody good,” Ramcharran said, when asked about any enemies his slain brother might have had.
Ramcharran’s reputed wife, Jenelle Caesar, also said he had never indicated to her that anyone wanted to harm him.
She disclosed that he was charged in 2007 for break and enter and larceny at an Albouystown shop. The case is still pending and she said that this is the only brush he has had with the law.
She believes that the person who killed Williams is someone who is familiar with his habit of going to the outdoor washroom during the early morning hours.
When Williams appeared in court in April 2005, it was alleged that the accused, who was 28 at the time, along with several others, invaded the man’s house on August 20, 2004.
Williams reportedly placed a gun to the man’s head while his accomplices relieved the victim of a television set, three bicycles, a pair of boots, four gold bands, a pouch and $231,000 cash.
Police alleged that on the same day, Williams, who is known to members of the Force, had carnal knowledge of a girl without her consent.
The matters were reported to the police and on April 8, 2005, Williams was arrested and charged.
Williams told the court that when the incidents happened he was in Cayenne, French Guiana receiving treatment for an illness.
And in December, 2007, Williams was again remanded by Magistrate Hazel Octave-Hamilton for robbery under arms.
It was alleged that on November 27, armed with a gun, he robbed Chatterpaul Gobin of one projector, three video cameras, a digital camera, $450,000 cash, four DVD players and other articles, all valued $1,315,000.
Williams’ attorney said that at the time, his client was employed as a security guard at a school under construction in the street where he lives.
