For another year in succession the Tactical Services Unit copped the top prize at the annual police anniversary route march yesterday, to mark the force’s 170th anniversary.
They turned back the challenge of the Felix Austin Police College (Georgetown) and the Presidential Guard who tied for second position in an early morning spectacle through the streets of Georgetown.
Led by Assistant Commissioner, George Vyphuis, close to 500 ranks and officers, along with several civilian partners first gave salute to Minister of Home Affairs, Clement Rohee in front of his office on Brickdam, and then to Police Commissioner Henry Greene at Eve Leary.
Commissioner Greene described the parade, which had the largest turnout in many years, as very impressive. He noted that it was a gallant show of fitness and co-ordination.
In an address after the parade, the Commissioner reminded the participants of the Disciplined Services Report which had recommended that the police force retain aspects of drill and musketry.
And given the display yesterday, it was evident that the recommendation has not been lost on the Guyana Police Force.
So impressed was the Commissioner that he announced several on the spot monetary rewards.
The most significant was $50,000 to the oldest participant, Florizel Fraser, who was part of the Police Wives Association contingent.
The Immigration Department contingent was also the recipient of the Commissioner’s Special award of $100,000 for its performance during the parade. It also earned the Best Female Unit on parade prize.
“I’m always hearing the talk that the Immigration Department is not police but if you see them march it’s unbelievable,” the Commissioner said.
He also presented a monetary award to the newly formed Police Scouts Movement, who were participating for the first time.
In addition to the Commissioner’s awards, several trophies and cash incentives were presented to the top units on parade.
In the civilian category, the Police Wives Association copped the top prize, beating out the Community Policing Groups.
After years of ‘knocking on the door’ the Criminal Investigations Department finally copped the first prize in the plainclothes unit category.
Yesterday’s parade was postponed to facilitate the police activity during the recently held CARICOM Heads of government meeting earlier this month.
