Twenty six persons flocked the Old Guyana National Service Sports Club, Carifesta Avenue to hone their skills in scrabble when the Guyana Association of Scrabble Players (GASP) hosted its second interactive session at that venue, yesterday morning.
Once again, the top seeded players, with support from those outside of the top ten rankings, sacrificed about three hours to tutor the newcomers and introduce them to the intricacies of the sport.
Last Saturday, the players were taught the mere basics which included learning the many two letter words, hooking techniques, improving one’s chances of scoring bingos and tallying their respective totals, among other skills. This week, the players were allowed to oppose each other while employing the skills learnt last week. They were also supplied with additional techniques in effective word formation.
Last week’s attendance President of the GASP, Moen Gafoor said that he was heartened by the healthy response even as he urged other interested persons to be a part of the programme.
Already, the players are beginning to demonstrate the confidence necessary for successful participation and their eagerness to learn has encouraged reciprocal action from the members of GASP.
The executive of the GASP had convened early last month and unanimously agreed to run off several interactive sessions during the school holidays for interested participants. The decision had arisen after an influx of requests to the GASP after Abigail McDonald had lifted the national title from Fred Collins.
The executives also decided to stage a competition among school children sometime in the near future. A similar experiment had been conducted at the North Georgetown Secondary School but despite the eagerness of the children to learn the finer aspects of the sport, the exercise was aborted for different reasons. GASP has recommenced efforts to have the school championships and from all indications have succeeded in piquing the interest necessary for a successful tournament.
Persons desirous of participating in the interactive sessions are free to visit the Old Guyana National Service Sports Complex, Carifesta Avenue, on Saturdays from 08:00hrs.
Those attending yesterday’s sessions were: Clive Bender, Rasulata StLouis, Wayne Vieira, Shanica Bourne, Sophia Hallim, Ricaldo Purnwasy, Carlton Bascom, Christy Day, Darnel Barker, Eketa Edwards, Sabrina Ragbeer, Santa Sasenarine, Nelisha Ramkissoon, Shawanand Anade, Rodney Chu, Akil Johnson, Matthew Gaul, Shawn Thomas, Akeem Thomas, Elizabeth Ojha, Sarah Ojah, Omari Dunn, Chelsea Weeks, Khadi Lashley, Randy Ramnarain and Christine Waddle.
