Linden players at unfortunate standstill
The Georgetown-based Inter-Guiana Games (IGG) basketball squad was reduced Friday, following a practice session, while the Linden-based players are at a loss regarding their preparation for the upcoming tri-nation event.
Secretary of the Georgetown Amateur Basketball Association (GABA), Robert Cadogan told Kaieteur Sport yesterday that the initial squad of 28 players was reduced to 17 after a session at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall.
The 17 players are Richard Mohandatt, Shelroy Thomas, Yannick Dundas, Clive Wilson, Drexel Amsterdam, Prince Giddings, Kadeem Jacobs, Wainwright Haynes, Rudolph Daly, Colwyn Leach, Ocie Austin, Keron Boyce, Elton Jefford Jr., Tesrick Rambissoon, Dominique Vincent, Darion Lewis and Coen Gittens.
Cadogan informed that the team will be further chopped before this month end, when they are expected to take on their Linden counterparts in a warm-up fixture before the units were combined for a nationwide preparation tour.
“The GT guys are gearing to engage the Lindeners before a final combination is picked and after then, the 16 players from Linden and Georgetown will go into final preparations with games in Berbice and so on,” Cadogan said.
The Georgetown players have been in practice for more than three weeks now, but Linden was not as fortunate according to the Linden Amateur Basketball Association President, Abdullah ‘Zico’ Hamid.
“There is no squad training in Linden – Linden players are training at their clubs.
We had a meeting where we were told that preparations would be made to bring the players together, but nothing has been done so far,” Hamid indicated.
The new LABA head lamented the advantage of the Georgetown preparations as opposed to what obtains in Linden. He believes that the National Sports Commission approach in the Mining Town is anything beside serious.
“We are defending champions and imagine the players cannot get themselves together to date. If we are really serious of defending the title that would have been done already,” Hamid told this newspaper yesterday.
The Inter-Guiana Games is slated for Suriname in September. The National Commission had tasked the two basketball sub-associations with the responsibilities of preparing the respective short-listed players for the event.
