DEAR EDITOR,
Frederick Kissoon’s column (July 16), in which he questions Andaiye, Alissa and me in relation to our perceived lack of home focus deserves an answer.
There are two main planks to his implied criticism.
First, that I and the other named defendants, focus on foreign as against domestic issues in our local public writing. Second, that this ‘absence’ of domestic focus must be derived from some unstated ‘fear’.
In response let me state the following for the record. I am as offended by the horrid current state of affairs in Guyana as any columnist/letter writer.
I do not have the facility of a daily column, neither am I nor others bound by Mr Kissoon’s focus and regularity of comment.
Freddie has a strong enough personality not to require kudos but he does provide quite effective exposure of the current regime.
While, like so many of my colleagues at home and abroad, I agree with a lot of his ongoing critique of the current Guyana state and politics, we are not captive to Kissoon’s timing and focus.
Another, unintended corollary of Kissoon’s argument hinges on a person’s freedom of speech to write or discuss anything at any time, a freedom Kissoon uses effectively.
While he implies that the defendants’ focus on foreign subjects comes at the expense of ‘local’ issues, what is his timeline for the critique of the current regime?
The reader might be forced to conclude that the defendants have never publicly (in the press) criticised the PPP regime at any time.
This pushes the matter in the realm of Kissoon’s well meaning desire for a certain pace and focus of response from the defendants.
I know Kissoon has a good memory and a gift for minutiae, and where criticism of the current PPP government is concerned, I can assure him that I do have a background of criticism, and absolutely no reason to be silent.
I have the honour of editing Dayclean Global (indicative of my continued ties with the WPA) a growing online paper which offers a wide content, inclusive of a focus on local politics and will continue to comment in any form and format, on issues local and international, as a concerned Guyanese.
I do hope that the fact of, and temperance of this response, does not make Freddy spill any more coffee.
