‘Says her shift was over’
A young mother is mourning the death of her 16-day-old daughter.
Nineteen-year-old Neisa Mahase, on Thursday, noticed that her baby girl, Hailey Amy Budram (born July 1), was having difficulties passing stool. The child also regurgitated her feed.
Baby Hailey was rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPHC) by her mother, grandmother, Seeta Mahase, her uncle, and her father, Vandell Budram after she developed a fever.
Within minutes of her arrival, the nurse that the family encountered started to quarrel with the mother, saying that her shift was over and that they would have to wait for another nurse. All the while the baby was in visible pain and only got worse, the family said.
The baby was then taken to the Medical Arts facility a half an hour later, where they were informed that there were no doctors available.
The baby by this time had become cyanosed, and they were urged to go back to the GPHC. The child was rushed into the emergency room at the GPHC, where all efforts were made to save the child. Hailey Amy Budram passed away thereafter.
According to Mahase, the child had been born with a breathing problem, as well as an infection. Young Budram was treated for both ailments and was discharged after spending a week in the hospital’s nursery.
The family informed Kaieteur News that they will be informing the Ministry of Health of the lack of attention.
A postmortem examination will be performed on the child on Monday.
