Venue unavailability cited
The new Georgetown Amateur Basketball Association (GABA) initial season is set for an unceremonious close following the development that their Division I and III Leagues will not commence, because of the venue unavailability.
“Because of the unavailability of the Sports Hall, we can’t schedule our tournament, since Burnham Court is not in a proper condition,” GABA Secretary, Robert Cadogan told this newspaper via telephone Thursday.
There is a Futsal tournament currently being played at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall and Cadogan indicated that he understands that a next competition will follow. He said that the association is nevertheless working.
“The GABA is still working. Our season will end this month. We were supposed to have our first and third division leagues, but there is nothing more we can do,” Cadogan said, adding that that’s unfortunate for players.
Basketball had enjoyed much of the Sports Hall earlier this year with a few promotional events being staged. However, the problem of its unavailability underscores one of the problems associated with multi-purpose venues.
The Sports Hall is the only respectable indoor facility in Guyana and traffic increases for its accessibility during the rainy season when many disciplines attempt to continue their programmes on the indoors or off-field.
