Essequibo teams Die Hard XI and Young Warriors are through to the national semi-finals, defeating Farm Masjid and Ariel XI last Sunday at the Police Sports Club Ground.
In the first match, Die Hard XI won the toss and batted in wet conditions and made a massive 175-2 in their 15 overs, with Patrick Rooplall, being in the form of his life, hammering his third century in succession, scoring 109 not out, which included 10×6 and 6×4 off just 53 balls, as he took full advantage of some wayward bowling by Farm Masjid.
In partnership with Darshan Narine, who made 46 in 33 balls, they put on 140 runs, which took the game away from the East Bank team. The best bowler for Farm Masjid was their skipper Imtiaz Mohamed who took the two wickets to fall for 14 runs in his three overs.
Farm Masjid in their turn at the crease never recovered after losing opening batsman, Budan Baksh off the first ball and thereafter it was a steady procession, until Younis Mohamed and Imtiaz Mohamed, coming off a century last Friday night, briefly held the innings up with Younis Mohamed (59 (1×6; 7×4) and Imtiaz 62 (2×6; 8×4) with a partnership of 100.
However, the target was too much and they eventually were limited to 136-4 off their 15 overs. Bowling for Die Hard was Yaseer Mohamed with 2-32 off his 3 overs.
In the other Quarter-final, Young Warriors showed great determination in defeating Ariel XI by one wicket in the final over.
Ariel XI won the toss and made a challenging 131-7 in 15 overs with Richard Latiff scoring a composed 48, which included 5×6 and 2×4. He was supported by Samuel Kingston with 36 (1×6; 3×4). Bowling for Young Warriors Jermaine Trotz took 2- 22 from his 3 overs.
Young Warriors took to the crease and were soon in their stride, but lost their captain Khalid Baksh with 34 on the board; that did not deter young Aaron Tribuwan, who went about it in a very mature way, hitting the bad balls to the boundary to carry his team within 12 runs of victory. However, his dismissal caused a mini collapse and it was left to Jermaine Trotz to bring take home by striking a four off the fourth delivery of the final over.
In the semi-finals to be played shortly, Young Warriors will come up against Die Hard XI and Rangers Sports Club will challenge Parika/Hydronie Sports Club for a berth in the final.
