Guyana left-arm spinner Totaram Bishun grabbed a career-best 7-64 as Guyana and the Windward Islands battled for first innings points on the opening day of their third round regional Under-19 three-day cricket match at Sabina Park yesterday.
Kaveem Hodge (43), Skipper Dalton Polius (41) and Rudolph Paul (33) offered resistance on a flat track as the Windwards fell for 215 just after tea. Guyana, led by an unbeaten 31 from opener Trevon Griffith, reached 71-2 by the close, needing another 144 runs for first innings.
Electing to bat in scorching heat, the Windwards, in the cellar position after 2 rounds, quickly lost Atticus Browne (8) caught behind off left-arm pacer Andre Stoll with just 13 runs on the board. Hubert Joseph (19) and Hodge added 65 for the 2nd wicket before Bishun, who now has 14 wickets this year, removed Joseph 12 minutes before lunch.
Hodge, who scored an unbeaten 52 in his last match, looked well set for another fifty before he cut a ball to point and ran himself out on the stroke of lunch to leave the score on 83-3. His 43 lasted 110 minutes, 90 balls and included 4 fours.
After the interval, Sunil Ambris (17) lofted Bishun for 6 to bring up the 100 before he was sent packing next ball.
Polius, in his third year at this level, put together 55 with Rudolph Paul before the St Lucian Polius edged Bishun to slip to leave the Islanders on 160-5 while Bishun, also in his 3rd year at this level trapped Marvin Paul LBW 12 runs later.
The 18-year-old Bishun, who had a 5-wicket haul against the Leeward Islands on debut in 2007 in St Kitts, soon had Audy Alexander (6) taken at slip to register his 2nd 5-wicket haul at this level before part-time spinner Alex Amsterdam got rid of Paul on the stroke of Tea with the Windwards on 187-8.
Bishun picked up the last two wickets in the final session although the Guyana fielding and general attitude in the field lacked enthusiasm as the last pair of Oscar George (13*) and John Fabien (11) added 20 runs in a frustrating partnership.
Early in the day both Joseph and Hodge were dropped by the keeper and at 2nd slip respectively in successive overs from the impressive Seon Daniels while Skipper Bramble, who had an ordinary day behind the stumps, also dropped Polius off Royston Alkins at 150-4 and Josh Thomas off Amsterdam at 212-9 after miss-stumping Hodge off Bishun at 59-1.
Guyana in reply lost Herrell Greene (4) when he drove a full toss from Fabien to short mid-wicket and Jeetendra Sookdeo who was caught and bowled by off-spinner Polius at 49-2. Sookdeo’s 28 lasted 34 balls and his demise gave Polius, the tournament’s leading bowler, his 15th wicket of the competition.
Griffith, the leading run scorer, looked much more sedate than in any of his previous innings and looked well set for a big score on day two after facing 59 balls and hitting a four and a six in his responsible unbeaten 31.
Griffith, who now has 250 runs and his confident sweeps off the spinners and classy drives off the quick men, advertised his talent to West Indies selector Robert Haynes who watched the game yesterday.
