Week of activities planned under the theme ‘Celebrating a Glorious Past’
The Berbice Cricket Board (BCB) will be celebrating its 70th anniversary from September 20-27.
The BCB known then as the Berbice Cricket Board of Control was founded in September 1939 and has been solely responsible for the development and expansion of the game in the Ancient County.
The BCB said it is proud of its achievements over the years and as such they have planned one week of activities, which will also see them reflecting and recommitting itself to the huge task ahead. The week of celebration would be held under the theme ‘Celebrating a Glorious Past.’
The Board’s Special Events Committee under the chairmanship of its Public Relations Officer and CEO of the Rose Hall Town Youth & Sports Club, Hilbert Foster, has organised a number of activities for the week; among them is an Inter-Faith Service, Public Exhibition, Induction of Life Membership with three persons to be inducted, Official Launching of the Berbice All Time Under-19 team, HIV/AIDS cricketers rally, a masters cricket match between New Amsterdam/Canje and Corentyne, quiz competition for schools and a tribute to cricket workers programme.
According to the BCB, the highlight of their 70 years of existence has been the selection of 13 Berbicians to represent the West Indies at the Test level. These players are John Trim, Rohan Kanhai, Basil Butcher, Joe Solomon, Ivan Madray, Roy Fredericks, Alvin Kallicharran, Sew Shivnarine, Mahendra Nagamootoo, Narsingh Deonarine, Sewnarine Chattergoon, Leonard Baichan and Clayton Lambert.
The Board is urging all former Berbice Test Players, National Players and former administrators to make contact with the Board office at Lot 7-1 Cheddi Jagan Street, New Amsterdam, Berbice on telephone number 333-2375 to get more information on the week of celebrations and to register to participate.
