With two consecutive defeats in the first 2 rounds of the regional Under-19 three-day cricket series, Guyana and the Windward Islands go head-to-head at Sabina Park from today in a bottom-of-the table clash.
While the Windwards languish in the cellar position without a point, Guyana, the most successful team in the 41-year-old history of regional youth cricket, have 4 points gained from their first round match when they slumped to defeat after taking first innings points from the joint leaders Leewards.
Guyana lost their second match to host Jamaica while the Windwards’ last defeat were at the hands of Trinidad and Tobago who share the lead with 24 points.
Guyana finished runners up last year after winning the title in 2006 and 2007 and with four fast bowlers selected for the first time since 1987 when Guyana also toured Jamaica, the hopes of the South Americans doing well this season was high when the team left Guyana.
However, despite wonderful batting from opener Trevon Griffith who scored the first century in the competition and is the tournament’s leading run scorer, the batting has been disappointingly inconsistent and the 210 in their last innings is Guyana’s only 200 total in 4 innings.
Jonathon Foo showed maturity in his confident 53 against Jamaica while Jeetendra Sookdeo got a half-century in the first round, but the problem remains the inability of the middle order to fire at the same time while opener Herrell Greene attempts to be unnaturally aggressive has hurt his team building a solid foundation.
Seon Hetmyer and Royston Alkins, who both played last year, have failed so far and apart from Griffith and to a lesser extent Foo, all of the batsmen have struggled to counter the short pitched bowling although the pitches so far have been less than devilish.
Skipper Anthony Bramble and Totaram Bishun has showed great commitment and application with the bat with a clinical display against Under-15 individual finalist Jessica Perkins.
The Boys team were due to have a tough assignment yesterday afternoon against the OECS, and would have had to perform well if they are to top the group. The boy’s team semi-finals are scheduled for 5:30pm today and although Guyana, OECS, Bermuda and Trinidad and Tobago have already secured places, the final match-ups were to be known after last evening’s results.
