The pretenders have all been sent packing and it’s now to serious business in the inaugural Guinness/Georgetown Football Association/Ministry of Culture Youth and Sport/ National Sports Commission Futsal competition being played at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall.
Twenty-four teams were invited and contested the group format but now it has whittled down to the group of 16 and knock-out stage which kicks off this evening at the same venue.
Those making it through are Pele, Flamingo, Uprising, Sunburst Camptown, Fruta Conquerors, BV Sideline Dam, Victoria Champions, Alpha United, South Soesdyke, BK International Western Tigers, Georgetown Football Club, Black Pearl, Beacon, Santos, Guyana Defence Force and Northern Rangers.
Eight of the 16-teams will square off tonight with three exhibition games also carded. Camp Street Taxi will set things off from 19:30hrs against Clippers Barber Shop to be followed by the first group-of-16 clash between Flamingo and South Soesdyke 30 minutes later.
The organisers, in an attempt to rekindle the interest of female football will showcase the talent of the ladies when respective teams from Eagles and Victoria take centre stage. Camptown will the stake their claim for a place in the quarters when they oppose BV to be followed by the Customs/Upper Level Barber Shop match up.
The penultimate game of the night will see Pele matching skills with Victoria Champions while the match to savour is the feature, a potentially explosive clash between arch rivals Guyana Defence Force (GDF) and Alpha United.
The GDF have already shown how devastating they can and have been while Alpha, who have already taste defeat at the hands of Flamingo in the group stage, rebounded in their last encounter to whip Buxton 8-0.
In results from the final night of group play, Pele, Alpha, Western Tigers, Santos, Uprising and South Soesdyke were victorious. The Victoria Champions/Houston Stars clash ended in a 0-0 stalemate but the result was enough for the former to make it through.
Troy Kellman was the unsung hero for Pele banging in a hat-trick in their 5-1 triumph over Riddim Squad. Kellman was one of three players scoring hat-tricks on the night. Alpha’s Ronson Williams and Fablo DaSilva, who had a dream game against Buxton who Alpha mauled 8-0, were the others.
Four players also recorded a brace each – Western Tiger’ Devon Millington and Kevon Gordon, O’Riley Small of Uprising and South Soesdyke’s Dillon Johnson.
Kellman’s three goals came in the 1st, 5th and 12th minutes, Quincy Hemerding (22) and Calvin Shepherd (24) supporting Pele’s victory thrust. Dorville Stewart secured the loser’s lone effort in the 9th minute.
Buxton were no match for Alpha who brushed off their loss to Flamingo with a composed performance. Ronson Williams hit the target in the 16th, 17th and 18th minutes this was after Leon Grumble scored from a well taken free kick in the 2nd minute of the encounter.
Alpha, though, took no chances after their woeful loss to Flamingo by strengthening the goalkeeping area with Shawn Johnson taking over; he also wore the captain’s armband.
Fablo DaSilva, who was somehow benched in the Flamingo game, was this time given a chance to show his worth and responded by firing in a hat-trick in the 5 minutes he spent in the middle.
He became a crowd favourite in that time with goals in the 20th, 21st and 23rd minutes. Gordon Henry hit in the other in the 23rd.
Western Tigers were too hot for Soesdyke to handle winning their second game on the trot 6-0. Kevin Gordon netted twice in the 6th minute, Devon Millington a minute apart in the 22nd and 23rd. Sherman David (14) and Dwayne Daniels (24) also cashing in.
Santos survived a near scare from Plaisance to scrape home 3-2. The former raced to a comfortable 3-0 lead by the 17th minute through goals from Dwayne Ali (4), Quacy Price (11) and Renault Fraser. But Plaisance fired back with strikes by Shawn Gittens and John Heliger in the 20th and 23rd minutes respectively.
The East Coast side was however unable to hit the network again as Santos defended their slim lead stoutly.
Uprising behind O’Riley Small’s brace (13, 14) easily disposed of Ann’s Grove 4-1. Supporting Small were Daniel Favourite in the 12th and Omali Nassy in the 17th. Maxton Adams responded for the losers in the 20th.
South Soesdyke’s Dillon Johnson was on target in the 4th and 24th while Fizal Mohamed hit the network in the 23rd to seal their place in the next round. Dellon John tucked in Independence Boulevard’s consolation in the 15th minute.
