After an absence from competition, due to an injury, National Race Walk Champion, Rudolph Mitchell returned with a bang, and despite a heavy downpour, out-walked a competitive field that included Jeremy Cornelius and Debidyal Harold, to capture the top podium position, when Guyoil, in collaboration with the Cavalier’s Sports and Tour Club (CSTC), staged its CARICOM Day event last week. The race started at the Ogle Airport Road, proceeded along the Railway Embankment and finished at the CARICOM Headquarters, Lilliendaal, ECD.
Cornelius and Debidyal finished in the second and third places, respectively, while Donna Ramkisson claimed the first place in the female category. Glayson Ralph out-walked his junior competitors to win in that category, while Franklyn Archer relegated Gerrad Alfred to the second place in the veterans’ category. Trophies and other prizes were donated by Guyoil, The National Sports Commission, Mings Products and Services and Ryan Rahaman.

On Sunday 3, race walkers would vie for honours in the Clarence B Kirton Memorial Race Walk, a six laps contest around the inner circuit of the National Park. Activities continue with several interactive sessions August 3-5, dubbed, ‘Know more about Guyana.’
Subsequently, the CSTC would host a two-day workshop on race walking techniques slated for August 6 and 7 at the Club’s headquarters. On August 8 walkers would compete for honours in the ‘Forbes Burnham Memorial Race’, starting at 6:30hrs from the National Cultural Centre and culminating at the Place of the Seven Ponds, Botanical Gardens. Another interactive session is slated for August 10-12, under the theme, ‘Know more about Guyana.’
Wednesday August 13 has been designated ‘Race Walk Day’ and race walkers would celebrate with a 6 laps, junior race walk around the Soesdyke Circuit at 06;30hrs. Consequently, they would proceed to the Club’s Headquarters, at 15:00hrs, for the opening of a photographic exhibition on local race walking activities.
