Defending Berbice Football Association (BFA) senior champions New Amsterdam United (NAU) maintained their unbeaten record and pole position following the latest round of matches in the Coca Cola sponsored competition this past weekend in the Ancient County.
Playing in the feature game of a double header at the Mahaicony CDC ground, NAU adapted well to heavy conditions to hammer home side Mahaicony United 5-2.
Adrian ‘Garnett’ Adams struck a hat-trick for the defending champs in the 13th, 59th and 79th minutes. His brother, Leonardo Adams scored in the 25th minute while an own goal from R. Gibbons in the 37th minute accounted for the other goal
Mahaicony United got their goals from Leroy Halley (14) and Sherwin Caesar in the 45th from the penalty spot. NAU’s Shurlone Edwards was given marching orders in the 70th minute for serious foul play.
In the opening encounter, Real Union disposed of Pistons United 4-1. Delroy Fraser scored a brace (25 & 70) while there was one apiece for Kerwin ‘Fluff’ Grant (57) and Delwin Fraser (60).
Real Union’s lone effort was converted by Orlando Garner in the 18th minute. Kennard DeSantos was expelled from the game for preventing an obvious goal scoring opportunity.
Over at the No. 5 playfield, home team and former champions Monedderlust secured their first win of the tournament, a sound 7-2 trashing of Rosignol United whose fitness levels were suspect in the later half of the match. Although the conditions were sodden the first half produced a very keen contest – both teams running at each others goal with purpose and intent. It was Monedderlust who drew first blood when Gladwin Johnson blasted the first of 5 goals in the 27th minute. Rosignol struck back one minute later through Tyson Carmichael.
Such was the confidence of the visitors that they even took the lead two minutes on when Keyron Boston slipped one through two defenders and past the diving goalkeeper, Orwin Johnson.
But Gladwin Johnson’s second goal 5 minutes before half time provided Monedderlust with the equaliser that closed the first half at 2 goals each.
The second half restarted with similar momentum to the first but it shortly became evident that Monedderlust were adapting better to the sodden conditions of the ground which worsened with some persistent drizzle and strong winds.
Kenson Lindey started the demolition in the 51st minute, Johnson scored his 3rd in the 68th, Elvis Croal joined the scoring ranks in the 69th while the Johnson show continued as he was on target two more times before the game ended to close with 5 goals.
In the first match, Cougars whipped Barzilla 6-1. Ron Wilson scored two (28 & 61), veteran Phillip Carrington (85 & 86), Selton Seals in the 41st and Kurt Alphonso (65) also scored for the winners.
Adosafi Felix (38) was the only player hitting the network for Barzilla. NAU lead the points table with 13 points from 5 matches, with 4 wins and 1 draw.
