Approximately one week subsequent to their departure to the 13th FINA World Championships in Rome Italy, Niall Roberts and Henk Lowe registered 24.37 seconds and 27.28 seconds, respectively in the Boys 15-17 years, 50 meters, Freestyle time trials event, to concretize their place in this year’s Goodwill Games slated for Barbados from August 14-16 next.
In total, thirty-seven swimmers participated in the meet with most of them successfully making the qualifying times. Towards this end, Secretary of the Guyana Amateur Swimming Association (GASA), Dr Karen Pilgrim, assured that the selectors would convene sometime later this week to determine the composition of the final squad to represent Guyana. The final composition would be drawn from among the best swimmers locally.
Dr Pilgrim explained that most of the participants in the Boys U-15-17, 50 meters, freestyle event, had already qualified by dint of previous performances. She said that the competitors were really attempting to lower their original timings. Among them were Mark Jardim, Errol van Lange, Elroy Hinds and Christopher Vincent.
Sunday’s action marked the culmination of three days of activity by the nation’s top swimmers to make the qualifying time and earn the selector’s nod for the Barbados event.
Earlier at the meet, on day one, twelve years old Aureyah Payne, representing the Orca Speed Swim Club, clocked 35.95, a new national record in the 50metre Backstroke for Girls 11-12 years old. Soroya Simmons and Britany van Lange also qualified for the same event after successfully meeting the required standards, but in the “B” category. The Goodwill Record, for 25m pools, is 35.16 seconds and was set by Soraya Van Dijk of Suriname when the Games was held in Guyana in August last year.
The swimmers were aiming for time standards of 37.39 seconds (Goodwill “A” time) and 39.63 seconds (Goodwill “B” time).
A member of the selection committee explained that the qualifying times set for the athletes are divided into two categories. He said that the timings for the 3rd place at the Goodwill games is used as the qualifying time for senior swimmers (A category) while the ‘B’ category determines the qualifying time for swimmers 9-10 years old.
The trials ended on Sunday last with the swimmers attempting to qualify in the 100m Backstroke, the 50m Freestyle and 100m Breaststroke.
