The Guyana Defence Force Coast Guard after acting on a tip-off on Saturday, interdicted three vessels that were moored alongside the Muneshwer’s wharf.
The vessels, three trawlers, “MV CHAMPAGNE”, “DADDY’s BOY” and “LUCKY LADY II” were reportedly sailed from Louisiana, USA.
Kaieteur News understands that a local businessman had purchased the trawlers and had them sailed to Port Georgetown.
In a press statement yesterday, the army said that searches of the vessels were conducted by the Guyana Defence Force, the Guyana Police Force and the Customs Anti Narcotics Unit following information that they were involved in arms and ammunition smuggling. The searches unearthed, one .22 round of ammunition, and two telescopic sights.
The vessels were detained and escorted to the Coast Guard wharf where further searches are being conducted.
The crews of the vessels were handed over to the Police and are currently assisting in the investigations.
