Six masked men, five of whom carried firearms, stormed an Albion grocery store and liquor restaurant and escaped with more than $5M in cash and jewellery about 12:10 hours on Friday.
The men robbed businessman Ganesh Prettipaul, his wife and several customers.
Investigations have revealed that Prettipaul and the watchman of his premises were standing outside of his grocery shop and liquor restaurant, when they were confronted by the six men who held them at gunpoint before taking them into the building.
Three of the men remained in the business section of the building where a salesgirl and two male customers were also held up, while the other three went to the dwelling area where they held up Ganesh’s wife, Shamdardai Prettipaul.
The woman was beaten about her face and body by the men and was subsequently tied up.
The bandits then ransacked the home and are reported to have taken away $2.4M and US$13,000.
Three cell phones, $11,500 and a quantity of personal jewellery were also taken away from the salesgirl and two customers, before the men escaped.
After the men left, the police were summoned but so far there have been no reports of arrests.
The businessman’s wife was taken to the New Amsterdam Hospital where she was treated for the injuries she sustained and sent away.
