The proposal for a gas pipeline connecting Guyana with Venezuela were among several topics discussed when Guyana’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Carolyn Rodrigues-Birkett met with her counterpart from the neighbouring Spanish-speaking republic.
The foreign Minister paid a one- day visit to Caracas, Venezuela, on Saturday.
She was with her Venezuelan counterpart Nicolas Maduro at the National Pantheon of Venezuela, where she laid a wreath in honour of the national heroes of Venezuela, including the Liberator, Simon Bolivar.
Also discussed during their meetings held later that day, the two Foreign Ministers agreed on a work programme in several areas of interest, including the resumption of the Good Offices Process of the United Nations Secretary-General, which is aimed at assisting both Guyana and Venezuela in the search for a peaceful resolution of the controversy in relation to the Arbitral Award of October 3, 1899.
They also spoke about the advancement of the construction of the shelter for the homeless in Guyana as well as assistance in the area of non-traditional agriculture and dairy sectors.
The dredging of the Mahaica/ Mahaicony and Abary river mouths, the proposed construction of a road link and proposed co-operation programmes under the Guyana/Venezuela High Level Bilateral Commission (HLBC) were also the subjects for discussion.
Rodrigues-Birkett and her Venezuelan counterpart also agreed that the HLBC will meet in Venezuela in November 2009, but the Guyana/Venezuela Mixed Commission, which oversees co-operation aimed at combating the illicit trade in drugs, will meet as soon as possible.
Concerning the situation in Honduras, the two Foreign Ministers reiterated their hope that there can be a speedy and peaceful return to constitutional government in that country. Minister Rodrigues-Birkett was accompanied by Ambassador Elisabeth Harper, Director- General and Mr. Keith George, Director of the Frontiers Department on the Official Visit. The Venezuelan Ambassador in Guyana, His Excellency Ambassador Dario Morandy was also in attendance.
