Dear Editor,
Port Mourant’s Cricket Club, one of Guyana’s premiere cricket institutions, which is credited for producing players the calibre of Rohan Kanhai, Alvin Kallicharran, Basil Butcher, Joseph Solomon and the late Ivan Madray, who all represented the West Indies and Guyana during the 50’s, 60’s, 70’s and 80’s, left a legacy which has been proudly emulated by later generations.
The Club’s first player to lead the Land of Many Waters at the Under-19 level was Radhay Solomon (1974) when the Benson & Hedges tournament was hosted by Guyana.
Deonarine Persaud followed Solomon when he was handed the responsibility of captain in 1981 and 10 years later the club again produced the Guyana under-19 captain.
Arjune Nandu was the man in charge when the Land of Many Waters contested the Regional Under-19 championship in Jamaica in 1991, but the club’s first glory at the this level followed the next year, 1992, when Andre Ricardo Percival led Guyana to victory and lifted the Northern Telecoms trophy, the touch was contagious and Percival would continue the trend the following year (1993) in St. Kitts and the next year 1994 in Barbados.
After the appointed Nicholas DeGroot broke his right thumb during the opening morning of the 1995 tourney in Grenada and could take no further part in the championship, the Port Mourant ‘magic’ continued with Mahendra Nagamootoo’s ascendancy to the captaincy the rest is history.
A player from Port Mourant lifted the Northern Telecoms trophy, again Mahendra’s achievement inspired his younger brother, Vishal, who ensured the Land of Many Waters ended its Regional Under-19 drought in Jamaica (1996) and continued a proud Port Mourant tradition.
The last player from Port Mourant to lead Guyana at the Regional Under-19 level was Zamal Khan, 2004 in Jamaica.
Strange enough the first time Guyana won the Shell Shield tournament, it was under the stewardship of Port Mourant’s Rohan Kanhai 1973. Alvin Kallicharran another Port Mourant product was the first Guyana Under-21 captain in 1966.
