The National Public Health Laboratory has now developed the capacity to test for the H1N1 virus, commonly referred to as ‘Swine Flu.’
This is according to Minister of Health; Dr. Leslie Ramsammy, who noted that the laboratory recently acquired the equipment to conduct the test, but it cannot be done until it acquires the reagents.
The reagents cannot be acquired commercially, thus forcing the Ministry of Health to source it from the Centre for Diseases Control (CDC).
According to Minister Ramsammy, a negotiation process is currently ongoing with CDC for that body to make it available to the laboratory as soon as possible.
The Health Minister explained that Trinidad and Tobago had developed the capacity to test for the virus, and had acquired the reagents from CDC and Guyana can now argue that it developed the same capacity in order to acquire the reagents from CDC.
Meanwhile, the Ministry continues to remain vigilant in dealing with the virus, since it was revealed that there were two confirmed cases in Guyana.
However, according to Minister Ramsammy, these persons have since recovered from the virus, thus reiterating that there is no need to quarantine anyone.
He noted that the strategy by the Ministry is to quickly pick up the cases and once that it done, the Ministry will be able to contain the virus so that it doesn’t spread.
“So when we started out with the opportunistic testing, where we could have even guessed that most of the tests would be negative, it was to increase the possibility that we would be able to pick up the cases quickly once it happens and that is what has happened in Guyana and we have been able to contain it so far.”
Approximately 30 specimens were sent out for testing in Trinidad and of that number, 20 came back negative.
