Police have charged the unlicensed 16-year-old driver who caused the death of 47-year-old Lilowtie Persaud.
The teen was initially charged with dangerous driving and unlicensed driving after the accident, but different charges had to be instituted after the woman died on Wednesday.
It was alleged that the teen, on June 23, at Alexander Village, drove a motorcar in a dangerous manner that resulted in the death of Lilowtie Persaud.
That charge was read by Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson, at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.
The teen, who was unrepresented in court yesterday, was not required to plead to the indictable offence. The matter was called up to the bench and after a lengthy discussion he was remanded.
The prosecution asked that the accused be remanded, since more charges were expected to be laid.
The teen was also charged with failing to render assistance, driving without license and breach of insurance.
For those three charges he appeared before Magistrate Nashaya Williams-Hatmin. It was further alleged that the teen, on June 23, failed to render assistance to the victim after the accident happened.
Another charge stated that the accused on the same date drove his motorcar without being the holder of a valid driver’s license. It was further alleged that the accused drove his motorcar without any insurance to cover third party. He pleaded not guilty to those three charges. He is expected to make another court appearance on July 15.
The 47-year-old finally succumbed to her injuries after clinging to life for three weeks. Reports are that Persaud died some time after 11:00 hours on Wednesday at the Georgetown Public Hospital’s Intensive Care Unit.
On Sunday, the woman was transferred from the Hospital’s Female Surgical Ward to the Intensive Care Unit after her condition reached the stage where doctors had given relatives little hope.
The woman was struck down three Sundays ago by a car, which was allegedly driven by the unlicensed 16-year-old.
Following the incident, Persaud was paralyzed.
The woman’s brother, Vijai Manohar, had told Kaieteur News that he was sitting outside his yard when the accident happened. He said that his sister was standing behind him watching him play, when a car that was coming from a westerly direction suddenly veered out of control.
The car had missed the domino players and picked up Persaud and deposited her in a nearby drain.
Manohar said that the car uprooted an almond tree before coming to a halt after crashing into a concrete fence.
