A minibus tout yesterday appeared before the courts on the charge of simple larceny. When faced with the choice of posting bail in the sum of $25,000 or going to jail for 18 months, he settled for the latter.
Twenty-nine year old Marlon Bradshaw, of Lot 128 Stanleytown, West Bank Demerara, yesterday appeared before Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson after it was alleged that he stole $4000 from the Brickdam Presbytery.
The Secretary of the Presbytery, Desiree McDonald, said that she noticed the accused entering the office while she was engaged in a conversation with another individual. She asked for an excuse and followed Bradshaw into the office. Soon after she noticed that the money was missing. By this time Bradshaw had left the office and had entered the waiting area.
She said that she confronted him and asked him to empty his pockets. Bradshaw agreed and no money was found. McDonald was convinced that he had taken the money and was eventually strip searched and the money was recovered.
When asked to plead, the accused pleaded guilty, but with an explanation. He explained that he needed the money for food stuff.
“To be honest meh worship, me needed the money for li’ l food; me got meh wife deh at home and she pregnant”. According to the Police Prosecutor the money was returned to the Secretary after it was discovered on his person.
The accused is a known character who was charged for similar offences, the Prosecutor said. He added that Bradshaw is currently on a two-year bond for a similar offence.
