As Griffith hits maiden ton
Guyana ended the opening day of their 2009 TCL regional under-19 three-day cricket campaign three runs away from first innings points against the Leeward Islands with 4 wickets in hand at the Up Park ground yesterday.
The Guyanese, hunting their 12 title this year, went into the game with a three-prong pace attack on a track with some bounce and although debutant quickie Seon Daniels grabbed 3-28 from 9 overs, it was the leg-spin of Jonathon Foo (3-68 from 13) and left-arm unorthodox Totaram Bishun (3-45 from 16) who conspired to confuse the middle order as the Islanders fell for 189.
Eighteen-year-old Trevon Griffith, in his second year at this level, batted majestically to register his maiden century (104) while fellow left-hander Jeetendra Sookdeo, also in his second year at this level, was unbeaten on 45 as the South Americans reached 187-6 by the close.
Opener Kjel Tyson, who played last year when Guyana beat the Leewards outright in Barbados, looked good for 33 at the top of the order before he was bowled by the 17-year-old Daniels after Bishun had made the break through by dismissing Andre Fox for 17 at 42-1.
Jamal Hamilton, who also played last year, was just begining to look set for a big score when he was trapped LBW for 55 by the lively Keon Joseph, one of eight players in the Guyana squad with previous experience at this level.
Kelbert Walters, who along with Joseph were the tournament’s quickest bowlers in Barbados last year, rallied the lower order with 25 before he was LBW to Bishun.
Joseph finished with 1-28 from 5 overs while left-arm pacer Andre Stoll, who opened the bowling with Joseph, took 0-11 from 4 overs as Guyana used 5 bowlers in sultry conditions.
Heerell Greene fell to Nelson Bolan for 8 at 21-1 when Guyana began their reply before Griffith and Sookdeo staged a recovery. Sookdeo who finished 5 short of his fifty by the end of the day, was forced to retire.
Guyana then lost Foo (9), Vice-Captain Royston Alkins (1), Seon Hetmyer (8) and Skipper Anthony Bramble (4) as Quinton Botswain grabbed 3 quick wickets, the Guyanese slumping from 144-1 to 155-4 and ended on 187-6.
Joseph (0) was with Sookdeo when stumps were drawn and the Guyanese will hope to build a lead on the second day today to try and set up an outright win.
Botswaine has so far taken 3-28 from 8 overs and Bolan 2-37 from 10. Walters, the genuinely quick but injury prone Anguillan, finished the day with 0-40 from 8 overs for the Leewards, who have won the title just three times. (Sean Devers)
