Residents of Land of Plenty and neighbouring villages along the Essequibo Coast that were described as unserved areas, because they are without electricity have been assured of electricity to their homes soon.
According to jeweler, Thakurdeen Khatun, operating as a jeweler without electricity for a number of years now has imposed upon him tremendous setbacks. According to him he was forced to produce less because he was operating a generator system, which incurred a lot of expenses.
He also noted that there has been enormously difficulty using lamps. And their only source of potable water was rain.
Another resident, Mr. Ramlagan, is beaming with excitement.
Field workers from the Guyana Power and Light Company are planting and wiring poles in those unnerved areas.
Some of those unserved areas are Onderneeming, Land Of Plenty, Mainstay, Suddie, and Riverstown Sands. Kumar Sharma, construction Manager of GPL, Georgetown branch, said that in 2005, the first phase of work was completed in the unserved areas. The second phase was due to begin at the end of May of this year.
