Driver charged for death of fiancée’s sister

Police have charged a 25-year-old man in connection with Monday night’s accident at Grove, East Bank Demerara, which claimed the life of Onika Holder, his fiancée’s 15-year-old sister.
Christopher Vasconscellos, of East Ruimveldt, appeared in the Providence Magistrate’s Court yesterday before Magistrate Priya Beharry.
He was placed on $200,000 bail on the causing death by dangerous driving charge, and is scheduled to return to court on July 29.
It is alleged that Vasconscellos was driving motor car PLL 1353 at around 20:00 hrs on Monday near Grove, East Bank Demerara, when he lost control and crashed into a utility pole.
Onika Holder, of Lot 135 Eastville Housing Scheme, Annandale, East Coast Demerara, was flung out of the vehicle. She sustained multiple injuries and was pronounced dead at the Diamond Diagnostic Centre.
Two of the victim’s siblings were also injured in the mishap.
Shanice Gardner, 22, of Annandale, East Coast Demerara, sustained injuries to the neck while Rolex Holder, aged nine, sustained a broken right arm.
The occupants were returning from a creek on the Soesdyke/Linden Highway when the tragedy occurred.
