Local promoter Ghalee Khan, 31, of Lot 498 Cane View South Ruimveldt Park, was yesterday remanded to prison by Magistrate Hazel Octive-Hamilton, at the Georgetown Magistrates Court.
It was alleged that on October 23, 2008 at Diamond East Bank Demerara the accused had in his possession 3.4 kilograms of cocaine. It was further alleged that Khan supplied the same cocaine to convicted prisoner, Orlando Dwayne Humphrey also called Orlando Dwayne Ifill.
He pleaded not guilty to the charge. He is being represented by attorney at law Glen Hanoman. The lawyer stated that it was a unique case because the person who is expected to give evidence in the matter is a “convicted prisoner”.
Hanoman further told the court that Ifill was initially charged for this same offence and pleaded guilty.
The lawyer noted that Ifill was a former employee of his client and was fired because of his dishonesty.
Hanoman said that few weeks later Ifill was caught at the airport trying to smuggle drugs out of Guyana.
Hanoman argued that Ifill was pressured by the police into saying that my client (Khan) gave him the drugs.
The prosecution asked that the accused be remanded and the matter be transferred.
That application was granted and the accused was remanded to prison and is expected to make another court appearance on July 10. The matter was transferred to the Providence Magistrates’ Court.
Khan was charged last year in the United States of America along with Danvor Griffith following a drug bust. He was charged with disturbing cocaine. The two men were reportedly tracked after leaving Guyana but were allowed to leave the JFK airport to make the drop before they were busted. Khan was under surveillance when he travelled on a flight from Trinidad to the US.
The two were granted US$250,000 bail by Justice Ramon F Reyes. However they both jumped bail and the prosecution had superseded the indictment and asked for their bail to be forfeited.
Khan returned to Guyana late last year, where he began to promote shows and events in and around Georgetown.
