A 16-year-old girl was yesterday remanded by Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson, on the charge of attempted murder.
It was alleged that the teen, on July 4 at Regent Street, with the intent to commit murder, wounded Dhanmattie Phulchand. She was not required to plead since the charge was indictable.
The accused was unrepresented by counsel.
The matter was called up to the bench, and after a lengthy discussion, the accused was remanded.
Kaieteur News understands that the teen has strongly denied that she attacked the virtual complainant.
Sources close to the investigation told this newspaper that the accused has told police officers that it was a friend who carried out the attack.
She is expected to make another court appearance on July 27.
Dhanmattie Phulchand, 24, was rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation on Saturday last, after armed bandits invaded her business place, Reshma’s Collection Store, in the City Mall.
The mother of two received several chops to her head and was admitted to the High Dependency Unit of the hospital.
While the motive for the attack was not clear, a friend who was in the Mall at the time told this publication that Phulchand was relieved of her handbag, which contained an undisclosed sum of cash, including a sizable sum of United States currency.
The close friend, who spoke with the victim after the incident, said that the attackers came from another store one floor up in the City Mall and that one of the individuals, a male, had hit her several times on the head to render her unconscious.
Eventually, persons went to her aid and the man fled, leaving her lying in a pool of blood.
