Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport Dr Frank Anthony yesterday presented a quantity of sport gear to the Enterprise Community Centre Council, at the Enterprise ground on the East Coast of Demerara.
Dr. Anthony encouraged villagers to get involved in physical activity and told the gathering that not only young people should be physically active since regular exercise helps a healthy lifestyle.
The Minister also encouraged the community to organise Inter-Street sports competitions and promised that if this is done in areas like football and cricket then the Ministry will donate a trophy for the final.
He urged those using the gear to care them and ensure that as much people benefit from them as possible.
Two basketball backboards were also presented to the Enterprise Primary School. The Enterprise Community Council said yesterday’s presentation was a follow-up on a promise made by Director of Sport Neil Kumar at a recent meeting with the Council.
It was also disclosed that an Inter-Block Twenty20 cricket competition has been planned for September 19 and that a set of cricket gear, also promised by the Director of Sport, should be available by then.
The presentation was made at the conclusion the match between hosts Enterprise and New Line Cavaliers.
The West Demerara side made 114 off 20 overs with National player Gajanand Singh making 31, as Chatterpaul Singh captured 2-10 and Nidesh Lall 2-18 for the home team, who recorded victory in the final over.
Demerara under-17 player Arif Habib top scored with 38, while first-class off-spinner Zaheer Mohamed and Parmanand Dindyal both made 23 not out. Singh had 2-19.
