The International Cricket Council (ICC) through its spokesperson has responded to concerns raised by Minister of Culture Youth and Sport Dr. Frank Anthony and Guyana Cricket Board President (acting) Bissoon Singh.
Dr. Anthony hosted a press conference on Tuesday afternoon, when he expressed disappointment at not only the matches slated for Guyana, but the manner in which the schedule was announced.
Following is the full text of the ICC’s response:
* As ICC World Twenty20 West Indies 2010 Tournament Director Ernest Hilaire explained during the week of venue inspections through the Caribbean, the process of deciding on the schedule was a huge logistical challenge. There were numerous considerations such as the desires of the venues, the competing teams, the broadcasters and commercial partners as well as weather patterns. The programme arrived at is the result of all those, sometimes competing, considerations;
* Historical weather patterns in Guyana indicate that there has been a greater tendency for it to rain in the latter part of when the tournament is due to be staged, hence the need to stage matches there in the first part of the event;
* Limited accommodation in Guyana means that realistically it would be extremely difficult for it to host more than the number of matches it has been allocated. The double-header nature of some match days, necessary to offer spectators and broadcasters value for money and also to ensure a short, sharp event, means at least four teams, plus TV crew, media and supporters in one location at one time, if not more (it is sometimes five or six teams). As examples, each team for the tournament requires roughly 30 rooms; on top of that there would be a requirement of around 100 rooms for the TV crew and, beyond that, additional rooms for media and also supporters;
* The above issues have nothing to do with the venue’s facilities, which were found to be excellent during the recent visit;
* Guyana is the only venue with guaranteed West Indies matches, as well as the opening ceremony;
* If anyone from the Guyanese organisers has any queries in relation to the tournament they can always pick up the ‘phone to Dr Hilaire, any member of his tournament staff or ICC officials and any of those will be happy to chat with them;
* The Guyanese staff involved with last week’s venue visit are an outstanding group and the ICC is confident they will deliver outstanding and memorable matches at Providence Stadium, as well as quality arrangements for the tournament.
